Growth You Don’t See Yet

Trusting the Process: Growth You Don’t See Yet
February can feel like an in-between season. The excitement of January goals has begun to settle, and the visible results of our efforts may still feel far away. We show up, do the work, and stay committed, but sometimes it feels like nothing is changing yet.
Think about a seed planted in the ground. For weeks, sometimes months, nothing appears above the soil. If you looked only at the surface, you might assume nothing is happening. But beneath the ground, roots are forming, strengthening, and spreading. The plant is preparing itself for the growth that will eventually appear.
In many ways, life, and ministry, works the same way. Real growth often happens quietly through consistent presence, faithful commitment, and small choices repeated over time.
At NorthStar Soccer, we see this kind of unseen growth every season.
Story of Faithful Presence: Coach Mario
Faithfulness often shows up quietly in consistency, commitment, and a willingness to invest without recognition. Coach Mario embodies this kind of unseen faithfulness.
Mario began his journey with NorthStar as an involved parent on our U12 ASL boys team. Over time, he sensed a deeper calling. Rather than simply supporting from the sidelines, he felt led to step in and serve. For the past two seasons, Mario has faithfully committed his time and energy as a volunteer coach, showing up week after week for his players.
Mario has poured into his team both on and off the field. Through consistent training, encouragement, and team devotionals, he has helped his players grow not only as athletes, but as young men developing confidence, discipline, and character. His investment doesn’t stop when the season ends. Even in the offseason, Mario continues to prioritize growth by taking the boys to additional tournaments, including most recently Campo X and creating opportunities for learning and shared experiences.
Mario’s steady encouragement, preparation, and willingness to give his time has made a lasting impact. It’s the kind of coaching that shapes lives. And much of that impact is the result of something simple: faithful presence over time.
Story of Faithful Commitment: Evelyn
Evelyn Rodriguez thoroughly enjoys her two energetic and fun-loving sons, Matthias and Marcelo. Her love is evident in the simple but meaningful ways she supports them, by consistently bringing them to each practice and game. Even after a long work week, she believes it is worth the time and effort to find the missing shin guard or the right field.
Matthias and Marcelo first connected with NorthStar through our refugee soccer camp. Even after moving thirty minutes away from the fields last month, Evelyn did not hesitate to register them again for the spring season. One of the reasons was the environment NorthStar creates, an environment where soccer is paired with character development through Scripture reading, discussion, and prayer. Once the boys learned when the season would start, they began asking their mom every day: “Is it the seventeenth yet? I want to see my friends and coach!”
Although NorthStar is a youth ministry focused on developing players, it has also become a place where families find community. In Evelyn’s experience, parents are able to build meaningful relationships with coaches and other families along the way.
Showing up week after week does take time and energy. But parents like Evelyn understand something important:
Just like seedlings need consistent sunlight to grow strong roots, children need consistent exposure to environments where they can grow in their skills, their confidence, and their character.
Trusting the Process
When you look at a plant above the soil, it’s easy to celebrate the visible growth.
But what makes that growth possible are the roots that formed long before anyone could see them. The same is true for the work happening in the lives of the young people we serve.
A coach showing up faithfully.
A parent making the drive to practice.
A player learning discipline through training.
A team praying together before a game.
These moments may seem small, but together they are building something much deeper.
February reminds us that growth is often happening beneath the surface. Through faithful presence, consistent commitment, and a willingness to keep showing up, seeds are being planted that will produce lasting fruit. And one day, what has been growing quietly will become visible. Until then, we keep showing up, because trusting the process means believing that the growth we don’t see yet is already taking root.
