Youth Referee Program
The NorthStar Referee Program is meant to help older players develop important leadership skills, hone time management skills, and take on a high level of responsibility.

The program takes place throughout NorthStar’s intramural season, where players will serve as referees for U10 and U8 soccer games, receiving feedback and support from licensed and experienced referees.

At the end of the program, NorthStar pays for the referees to take the USSF license course to become licensed officials and will also help pay some of their initial costs for equipment.

Our Youth Referee program is funded by generous donors in our community, join us as we work towards our Spring 2025 funding goal!
What We
Offer
01
Build Leadership Skills
One of the goals of NorthStar is to provide youth with opportunities to learn about leadership. Refereeing allows them the opportunity to learn how to take charge of their environment.
03
Encourage Teamwork
Typically, referees work in small crews of 3. Participants of our program must learn to work together with different groups and learn both to lead a small group and to be an effective member of the group supporting each other.
05
Provide financial opportunities
Refereeing is a well-paying opportunity, particularly for high-school and college students. Helping young people become referees early can provide them with an excellent job opportunity, and even potential career path that might not otherwise have been open to them.
02
Teach Responsibility
Serving as a referee means that young people have to learn how to manage themselves and their time. They are responsible for ensuring that they arrive at the field on time, pay attention during training, and learn the laws of the game in order to succeed. Ultimately, every graduate of the NorthStar Referee Program is someone who worked hard to earn their opportunity to work as a referee.
04
Foster Confidence
One of the most important lessons all referees must learn is to act with confidence, even in uncertain situations. They must learn not only to feel confident, but to present themselves outwardly with confidence to parents, players and coaches. Our goal is to help improve the confidence of all our graduates, both on and off the field.
Parent Information
Players 14 and older
For players 14 and older, we will be paying $12/game. We also will be providing the following:
-
After completing at least 13 games for NorthStar and passing online and on field assessments that will be given throughout the season, NorthStar will pay for the player to take the test to become a fully certified USSF Soccer Referee and provide them with a referee starter kit that includes the uniform they need in order to referee.
Players 13 and younger
These players cannot be paid to referee by NorthStar, but can earn the same awards as other participants.
-
After completing at least 13 games for NorthStar and passing online and on field assessments that will be given throughout the season, the player will be awarded a certification of completion (think of it like a drivers ed certificate that you can redeem later). NorthStar will pay for the player to become a fully certified USSF Soccer Referee and provide them their equipment as soon as they turn 14.
-
Players who earn a certificate, then do not redeem it that year and do not continue to participate in the NorthStar referee program must complete a field and written assessment to ensure that they are still ready to complete their referee certification before NorthStar will redeem the certificate of completion.
USSF test fees cost around $100 and the uniform package that NorthStar will provide has a value of $100.
